Reading

L.I to Understand the main idea of the text

Today we read a story called Fred’s decision, this story is about Fed who buys a new car and needs to looks after it. In order to do that fred bus two geese to alert him if anyone tries to trespass and try to steal his car. Fred chose geese because they used to alert roman soldiers when the enemy had come to attack them. For the create activity we created a DLO that has a labeled diagram of a goose and tells you five facts about the animal.

Maths

L.I to find the most efficient strategy

As a group we worked on papers to write our thoughts more clearly. Our strategy was to add the first 3 numbers (657, 493, 1183) and get an answer of 2333, we then subtracted that number from 6000 to get our final answer of 3667. We then created a DLO of our understanding.

Maths

L.I to use the most efficient strategy

This week for online learning I worked with a group of four people to solve this question. We worked out that each person would shake hands with 53 other people since there are 54 people and you can’t shake hands with yourself. So we multiplied 53x54 to the answer which is 2862.

Question: There are 54 students in LS2. If everyone shook hands with each other how many handshakes would there be altogether?

Strategy: 2862, we found 1 person was to hand shake 53 people, since said person cant shake hands with themselves. So we multiplied 54 by  53 because that's how many people each person would shake hands with. Simply put our strategy was 1:53 x 54.

Writing

L.I to write a list poem

For lockdown writing this week we wrote a list poem. A list poem is where you list a bunch of different things about your topic. The poem uses repetition in the sentences in between the first and last sentences. It also does not have to rhyme so you can write anything related to your topic. A List poem is a fun way to write poems and I really enjoyed doing this activity because of that.

A Million list poem

A Million is the days it feels like  in lockdown

The heartbeats we have

The number of possibilities

The words I’ve spoken

The number of times I have enjoyed a meal

The hairs on my head

A Million is the amount of times my mom has yelled at me to wake up.

Maths

LI:To use the most efficient maths strategy.

For the first Maths lockdown challenge we figured out how many wall and roof pieces the world’s first 3D printed house has.

What we did- we read the questions then we did 195 + 85 =  280

We did the rest of the questions as you can see above in the DLO. We worked cooperatively in groups to solve these questions and create a DLO of our findings.

The letter Q

LI: to extend our vocabulary with the letter Q

For Reading we were learning about words starting with the Letter Q. We started off by reading a text talking about the origin of the Letter Q, and where it came from. Our task was to create a DLO (Digital Learning Object) showcasing words we know starting with the Letter Q, and words we don’t know starting with Q.

It was really fun and interesting doing because we got to learn new vocabulary, and we were able to do this activity with our friends.

Haoura and Olympians

Embracing how to win and lose is important because you will be more accepting of the result and will bounce back next time and at the same time showing good sportsmenship & respect to your competitiors. Athletes train both their body and mind so that all their four walls are balanced no matter what happens on the big stage. When you know how to win and lose you can reflect on the past and try to do better when another chance comes around.

Mindfulness

LI: to practice mindfulness when in stressful situations.

Mindfulness is training your mind to become aware of not only yourself, but also your surroundings. When it comes to mindfulness, there are two zones. The red zone and the green zone. The red zone is all the negative emotions you feel when stressed. The green zone is all of the positive emotions which help you when feeling stressed. For example, when in a stressful situation, you can clear your mind and stay calm. This is when your mind enters the green zone. In the red zone, you feel waves of negativity overcoming your mind.

When trying to focus, your mind wanders. Although your body can be present, your mind can be wandering around and thinking about the past or future. With mindfulness, you focus on the present moment and what is happening at that moment.

The mindfulness practice helps you clear your mind, focus on your breathing and overall makes you content and composed. To do this activity, we faced away from others to be focused. We had a straight back, soft stomach, closed eyes and our hands on our knees. When the mindfulness bell rang, we calmed ourselves and focused on our breathing. When breathing, you are more focused on you and your surroundings.

Provocation

LI: to form an informed opinion

A provocation is a topic which brings our strong emotion within somebody. This provocation was about olympic venues and should countries that host the olympics spend billions on these facilities just for them to not be used again. In this task we formed an informed opinion on whether we thought it was a good idea or bad idea to build these venues.

Venn Diagram

L.I: To compare the past and present rules.

For this reading activity we were tasked to compare the olympics rules from the past and the present using a venn Diagram.

There was a big difference between the past olympic rules and the present. The rules that stayed the same was no shoving, no holding, no cutting of other racers.

Olympic challenge 4

L.I to find the most efficient stratigy

For this olympic challenge we counted the medals of the top 10 countries to create a medal tally. The medal count was from two dates 1986-2012 and the 2016 olympics. Once we count up all the medals from the top 10 countries  we put ranked them from 1 to 10. The strategy that we used was addition. The country with the most medals was the USA with 2673 olympic medals.

Reading

 L.I to identify main ideas

This week for reading we read a text called Poros of Malia. This text was about a man named Poros who competed in the sprints in the ancient olympics. Poros had won this event in the olympics prior so he had to win or they would have been made fun of. After we finished the text we answered a list of questions, by answering these question we got a better understanding of the story because it helped us remember the details and the main idea f the text.

Flow Charts and Radio chat

L.I to understand how flowcharts to relate to coding blocks\

To understand how to get the microbit to talk toanother microbit using radio signals

This week for tech we coded our microbits to send messages to another, to do this both mocrobits picked the same number between 1 and 255 so that the messages would be sent to the correct person. There were 3 different buttons that we could use to send messages and the message would be sent then the button was pressed.

Here is the code

Olympic challenge 1

L.I to use the most efficinet stratigies to find the answers

Since the olympics is currently happening, our maths group have 8 olympic challenges for us to complete. This challenge was about Michael Phelps and the events he competed in. Our questions were: On average, every swim stroke Michael Phelps take gets him 2 metres down the pool. Michael comped in 8 different events in the beijing olympics in 2008. In total how many metres did Michael swim for his gold medals?

FInally, how many strokes did Michael have to take in total for all o his events if Michael can propel himself 2 metres with each stroke. The strategies we used addition and division, first we added up all the metres Michael swans and then divided it by two because he advanced 2 metres down the pool.

Narrative

L.I to use the ideas on your plan to write a narritive

THis week for writing we looked at narratives, a narrative is a story of a sries of events or experiences that can be fictonal or non fictonal. We wrote a narritive about a pair of  shoes that were in a really bad condition. My partner and I wrote the narritive in first person. Before e wrote our narritives we had to ask our selves these questions about the shoes:

How did they get here?

What happened along the way?

How did they feel?

What did they see?

What did they hear?

What did they smell?

What did they touch?

Narrative:

New to old

LI: To use the 5 senses and personification to help us paint a picture with words.

LI: To devise a writing plan

LI: To use the ideas on your plan to write a narrative

There I was, old, abandoned and mistreated. I was left on the dark and dangerous streets all alone ownerless, But I wasn’t like this before.

Once I was prized possession of a young little boy called Jake. He wore me everywhere, to school, to the mall and even in his house. He wore me a lot, maybe a little bit too much.. The more he wore me the less durable I was getting. One day he put me on to go hiking with his friends, that was the last time he wore me.

One day, Jake went hiking with his friends where he slipped on a rock and he ripped me in half.He was so sad that he glued me back together. But it didn’t last. I thought it was all over, but fortunately Jake had another solution.

He took me to a shoe shop and he repaired me. When I was repaired I looked good as new. Old to new It was a miracle.

LI: To use the language features and structure of published poem to help use write our own poem.

We looked at the language features and structure of a poem called ‘A Moment in Time’ and used our experiences from camp to follow the structure and collaboratively create our own moment in time poem. To describe what we heard, what we saw, how we felt and what we wondered we used our senses, adjectives and adverbs.

Ajectives are words that describe a noun.

Adverbs are that modifies a verb.

Toys

LI: To strengthen connections to technology

This week we have been learning about the 6 processes of Technological Design and how each one is important in the process of designing a product. We are using the processes of technological practices to  design and build a rubber band- powered rover that can scramble across the floor. I found this interesting because we faced different challenges, for example what materials we could use to make our rover.

Duffy Assembly

LI: To understand how reading can change one's life.

Today we had Marc from Duffy come and talk to us about the importance of reading and how reading can make a big impact on your life.  Although Marc had some challenges in his life he used reading as a tool to get through the hard times.  Marc believes that there is only CANs and not CAN’Ts. I found the words that Marc said intersting because he told us about the difficulties that he went through to get where he is.

Key Competencies

LI: To compare the Key Competencies we think we will use on camp and the Key Competencies we actually used.

Before we went to camp our challenge was to think about when we might use the Key Competencies as we faced the challenges.  When we came back from camp we looked at this and compared how we thought we would use the Key Competencies and how we actually used them. I found this activity enjoyable because I looked back at the things that I did on camp

Kokako Infographic

LI: To create an infographic using google draw that tells your audience facts about the kokako.

This week, everyone in LS2 has been given a set of different challenges based on our camp. For this activity we used our smart searching skills to find information about the North Island Kokako bird.  I found this activity interesting  because I learnt new facts about the Kokako bird such as its diet, habitat, etc.

Brochure

LI: To a collaborative brochure that tells others why Kokako Lodge is a great place to go on camp

Over the last week everyone challenged themselves during the sessions at archery, high ropes, kayaking, raft building, camp cooking, pancake race and team building/orienteering. Our group collaborated to create a brochure that shows others why Kokako Lodge is a great place to go on camp. I found this activity interesting because we talked about the different things that kokako lodge provides for camp's.

Camp collage

LI: To create a collage of your camp highlights

This week LS2 have been celebrating our camp. I created this collage to show my time at camp and the activities I enjoyed. To make my collage effective I thought about the size of the images, the angle of the images and I tried hard not to leave any gaps between the photos. I enjoyed doing this tasks because I created a collage about the things that I did at camp, also because I got to look at the photos.
