Current events

L.I to write about the current events

Today I have picked an article for my current events. The article was about American Football player Tom Brady leaving the New England Patriots and joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This story  of unexpectedness because he had spent 20 years with the Patriots and showed no sign of leaving. It will also have a big impact on Patriots fans because he was the teams star player and had won 6 championships with the team.

Kiwi Can reflection

This week for Kiwi Can we talked about role models. Role models are people who you look up to and someone that gives you inspiration. Our energizer was called Hammer, in this game we  pick a partner and our fists at the top and the bottom of their's. We were given two movements which were up and down where the hand on the top would down and the hand on the bottom would move up. After that we talked about who our role models are and why. Lastly we did our activity which was picture it where in groups of six we had to use ourselves to make that object or shape.

Explorer vs Adventurer

This week for inquiry we did a Venn diagram where we separated explorers from adventurers and also people who were both. Like Captain Cook and Kupe. On the Venn diagram there were people like Jeremy Clarkson, David Livingstone, Dora the explorer, Nobu Shirase and Moana. An explorer is a person who explores now or unfamiliar area. An adventurer is someone who enjoys or seeks adventure.

Gourds

L.I to learn about gourds and their use in early Polynesian navigation

This week we learnt about gourds and their use in early Polynesian navigation. Gourds were used to keep fresh water for the voyage. Our task was to make a past and present DLO which explained how we use gourds today and how people used it over a thousand years ago.

Maths

LI: solve addition problems with tenths by changing one number into a whole number

This week for Maths we created two DLOs showing how we solved two team challenges that involved adding decimals. Using the most effective strategy we found the answer. The most effective strategies were written algorithms and place value. In this session we were learning rounding and compensating. The two questions we tried to solve were: 5.75 + 2.0 = 7.75 x 12 = ?

218.99 + 109.85 = ?

Exploring provocations

L.I To consider both sides of a provocation.

This week we have been exploring both sides of a provocation. A provocation is an action or speech that triggers strong feelings about a topic. Our provocation was "Should New Zealand become a cashless society? After considering both perspectives (sides) we think that we should have both cash and card so the people that can't use card can pay with cash and we can also donate spare coins to charity.

Kiwi Can

This week for kiwi can we talked about how to be a leader and  how to be confident. First we started with our energizer called bop it. Bop it is a game where you have to try and copy the moves and not do the wrong one or be the last one to do the move. Next we were talking about being confident and how we can be confident. To be confident you need to take risks, try your best and overcome your fears. After we played our activity called bowchickawow. It is a game where you have to copy the next persons moves. When you do the first persons move, you have to copy it and add a move. Then we moved on to talking about how to be a good leader. Being a good leader to us is being responsible and being a role model.

Maths

For our Maths task we made a DLO on one of our team challenge questions. On this DLO we showed the equation we were trying to figure out, the strategy we used to figure out the equation, and answered the questions on the equation. This question was about figuring out the ages of the three men, who were Andrew, Brad, and Charles.

Places named by early explorers

For this activity we put all the places we could find named by or after early explorers and explain how it got its name ( Captain Cook, Abel Tasman and Kupe) People name things after famous people, themselves or how things look at that place. For example Kupe found New Zealand by accident and his wife named it Aoteoroa because of the long white cloud. One of the most interesting places was Banks peninsula. Did you know that new Zealand has the longest place name of the world, it is called Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu

Past and present Captain cook & Kupe

Today we did past and present, for this activity we had to write what Kupe, Captain Cook and what we would travel from Tahiti to New Zealand in today. We also wrote the problems that they would have had and we today would have traveling to Tahiti. Kupe used a waka, Captain Cook  used a navel vessel and today most people would go on a commercial fright or go on a cruise.

Maths

This week for maths we worked in our thinking teams to make five questions from the statistics were were given from the 2017 ASB marathon. In our groups we had to make questions that would challenge us in solving them. After we had our questions we sat with a group of friends and tried to solve each others questions.

Kiwi Can

This week for Kiwi Can our topic was positive communication. Our enegizer was Up and down, in this game we had to put our cones up or down depend on what instruction we got and the person we got the most cones up or down won. After that we had our activity which was street fighter. In this game we had five moves for example number one which was a punch. The Kiwi Can Leaders said two to three numbers and we had to do that move and make the sound, you beat the other person by doing the moves faster than them.
